GMC Sierra 3500HD

Importing a used GMC Sierra 3500HD from the USA

The GMC Sierra 3500HD is a one-ton heavy-duty pickup built for work most European trucks simply cannot touch: fifth-wheel and gooseneck towing well beyond 15 tonnes, a Duramax turbo-diesel with monstrous torque, and a payload that shrugs off loads that would flatten a light commercial van. Germans import these for horse and car trailers, heavy caravans, agricultural and construction use, or simply because nothing else pulls like a dually. USCar Trader acts as an independent broker for used examples; we arrange sourcing, shipping and clearance, and we neither sell new trucks nor represent GM as a dealer.

Model history: years and generations

The relevant trucks split into two GMT platforms. The 2015-2019 generation (K2XX-based HD) carried the LML and later L5P Duramax. The current T1 generation, launched for the 2020 model year and facelifted for 2024, is the one most buyers now import a used GMC Sierra 3500HD from the USA. The 2020-2023 cars share a body; the 2024 refresh brought a heavily reworked interior with a large diagonal touchscreen and updated Denali Ultimate trim. Across both, the 3500HD is offered as a single-rear-wheel (SRW) truck or a dual-rear-wheel dually (DRW) for maximum capacity.

Engines, transmissions and drive

Two engines matter. The workhorse is the 6.6-liter L5P Duramax turbo-diesel V8, producing 445 hp and around 910 lb-ft in 2020-2023 trucks, rising to 470 hp and 975 lb-ft after the 2024 update, paired with the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic. The alternative is the 6.6-liter L8T gasoline V8 (401 hp, 464 lb-ft) on a 6-speed, chosen by buyers who want lower purchase cost and simpler emissions hardware. The vast majority of import candidates are Duramax/Allison trucks with four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case. That diesel-and-Allison combination is the heart of the truck's towing reputation and its resale strength in the US.

Equipment lines and body styles

Cab and bed choices define the truck as much as trim. You will find Regular, Double and Crew Cab bodies, with standard or long beds, in SRW or dually form. Trim runs Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4 (off-road) and Denali/Denali Ultimate at the top. Duallies are almost always Crew Cab long-bed configurations bought for serious towing. Denali brings leather, the premium audio and the plush cabin; AT4 adds skid plates and off-road suspension. For an EU buyer, the practical questions are dually versus single-wheel, bed length for garage and street fit, and gooseneck/fifth-wheel prep.

The US used market

Heavy-duty pickups hold value strongly in America, so clean L5P Duramax trucks are sought-after and priced accordingly, but supply is steady because they sell in large numbers to trades and ranchers. Expect 2020-2022 examples ranging from lightly used Denalis to high-mileage work trucks that have towed hard. Mileage on HD diesels runs high — 150,000 km and beyond is normal and not alarming on a well-maintained L5P. Southern and western trucks avoid road salt; a fleet truck with full service history can be a better bet than a low-mile example of unknown maintenance.

Is an import right for you?

This is a tool, not a lifestyle accessory. It makes sense for anyone regularly towing very heavy trailers — horseboxes, multi-car transporters, large fifth-wheel caravans, plant equipment — where a European pickup or SUV runs out of capacity. Buyers should be comfortable with the truck's size (parking and narrow lanes are a genuine challenge), its diesel emissions hardware, and the reality that registration as a heavy vehicle affects German tax and, above 3.5 tonnes permissible mass, driving licence class. If you need the capability, nothing in the European mainstream matches it.

Common issues buyers should know

The L5P Duramax is regarded as the most durable of the modern Duramax family, but it is not without issues. The high-pressure CP4.2 fuel pump is the headline concern: if it fails it can send metal debris through the fuel system, an expensive repair, so many owners fit a fuel-system disaster-prevention kit and use quality fuel. The emissions stack — DPF, SCR/DEF, EGR — is complex; a truck with deleted or tampered emissions equipment must be avoided outright, as it cannot pass German approval. Watch for turbo actuator faults and injector wear on high-mileage trucks. The Allison 10-speed is strong but check for harsh shifts. On the body side, inspect the bed and frame for corrosion and towing stress cracks. Overall Sierra 3500HD reliability is good for a hard-worked HD diesel, provided the emissions system is intact and maintenance is documented.

Differences from the European version

US HD trucks come with amber or red rear turn signals, no rear fog lamp, headlamps for right-hand traffic, and MPH clusters. The DEF/AdBlue system and diesel particulate hardware must be fully functional for German emissions approval. The sheer width of a dually and its length affect road-legal fitment and parking. These trucks are typically classified in Germany as Lkw (goods vehicle) or Sonderfahrzeug depending on setup, which changes tax and, above 3.5 t, the required driving licence (class C1 or C).

Import step by step

Select the exact truck and confirm cab, bed and axle configuration; verify the VIN and the build history via Carfax or AutoCheck and confirm the assembly plant for the origin question; use escrow for payment; arrange US inland transport and ocean freight (container is common for duallies) to Bremerhaven; clear EU customs; present for TUEV inspection and individual approval, including emissions verification; then register at the Zulassungsstelle in the correct vehicle class.

Customs and taxes: what applies

Key point: duty depends on the plant of build; only a VIN check secures the 0% rate. Import VAT of 19% applies regardless.

Because this model is flagged origin-neutral, the EU import duty depends on where the individual truck was actually built — the Sierra HD range is assembled at GM's Flint Assembly in Michigan, which can support US origin, but the plant must be confirmed from the VIN for each vehicle. With provable US origin and direct transport, 0% duty is possible under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 (valid since 1 July 2026, through 31 December 2029); without documented origin the standard duty rate for the vehicle category applies. Note that duty classification for pickups can differ from passenger cars. In every case the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) applies on top of customs value, duty and freight. We add no margin — you pay the seller, freight, duties and VAT, plus our brokerage fee.

Modifications and single-vehicle approval

Expect to fit a rear fog lamp, correct the headlight beam pattern for right-hand traffic, and confirm rear turn-signal colour. The cluster must show km/h; the odometer is converted from miles. Emissions equipment is checked thoroughly — any evidence of DPF/DEF deletion is a hard stop. Width, lighting on a dually, and mudflaps may all be scrutinised. Classification as Lkw affects the registration paperwork and annual tax.

What to verify before buying

Decode the VIN and confirm the Flint build plant for the origin claim. Pull full Carfax/AutoCheck history for accidents, title branding and odometer integrity. Confirm the emissions system is 100% intact and unmodified. Verify the CP4.2 fuel pump history and whether a protection kit is fitted. Inspect frame, bed and fifth-wheel mounts for rust and towing stress cracks. Check service records for the Allison and Duramax. Confirm title is clean, not salvage or rebuilt.

Common questions

Can I register a Sierra 3500HD in Germany?

Yes, via individual approval, but usually as a goods vehicle (Lkw). Above 3.5 tonnes permissible mass you need a C1 or C driving licence.

Does it qualify for 0% import duty?

Possibly. It is built at GM's Flint plant in Michigan, which can support US origin, but the plant must be proven from the VIN and transport must be direct. The 19% import VAT always applies.

How much can it tow?

Depending on configuration, gooseneck and fifth-wheel ratings reach roughly 16 tonnes — far beyond any European pickup.

Diesel or gas engine?

The L5P Duramax with Allison is the towing choice and holds value; the L8T gas V8 is cheaper to buy and simpler on emissions but far thirstier and weaker on torque.

What is the CP4.2 concern?

The high-pressure diesel fuel pump can fail and contaminate the fuel system. Ask whether a protection kit is fitted and review fuel-quality history.

Do I need AdBlue?

Yes, the diesel uses DEF (AdBlue) for its SCR emissions system, which must be functional for German approval.

Is a dually harder to import?

Not fundamentally, but its width and length affect fitment, parking and often container shipping cost.

Can I import a truck with deleted emissions?

No. Tampered or deleted emissions hardware cannot pass German approval and should never be purchased for import.
